The rugged stone, massive scale, fine detail, and ingenious mechanical systems of this magnificent Gilded Age mansion recall the powerful presence of James J. Hill, builder of the Great Northern Railway.
With 13 bathrooms, 22 fireplaces, 16 chandeliers, a reception hall nearly 100 feet long, sophisticated technical systems, and a two-story, skylit art gallery, it was once the largest private residence in the state.
The home served as the center for the public and private lives of the Hill family for 30 years. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961.

“I look at the bridge as a regional asset,” said Bill Rubin of the St. Croix Economic Development Corp. “In the heartland, in the valley, we’ve got something everybody should be proud of. It accomplished a lot of what folks desired — safety, visual quality, easing the congestion.”
Dignitaries gathered Aug. 2 to celebrate the opening of the four-lane bridge, 1½ miles south of downtown Stillwater. To many of them, the bridge with its enormous piers and cables represents an engineering feat ranking with famous bridges such as the Golden Gate in San Francisco.

TO FORT SNELLING 9/21/17
Our living history guide, dressed in the early 1800s uniform, conducted most of the Fort Snelling tour from our bus. The soldiers at the northwestern frontier outposts tried to restrict commercial use of the rivers to United States citizens, keep American Indian lands free of white settlement until treaties permitted it, enforce law and order, and protect legitimate travelers and traders at Fort Snelling, the garrison also attempted to keep the peace between the Dakota people.
The Round Tower is the oldest structure at Fort Snelling.

All but abandoned for decades, five military buildings on what is known as Fort Snelling’s Upper Post are being rehabbed to 58 affordable apartments for homeless veterans and their families. The estimated cost is $15 million. The buildings on the Upper Post have suffered from deferred maintenance and vandalism over the years and are rapidly deteriorating following the Fort’s decommissioning after World War II.
The gravesite of a horse called "Whiskey"(below). Lieutenant Hazelrigg discovered that Whiskey had a variety of talents. Excelling at polo, he showed an “instinct for the game” that soon had sportswriters claiming that he “qualified as one of the best polo players on the field.” Whiskey quickly mastered tricks such as lifting the lieu- tenant’s cap from his head by its visor and replacing it, removing a handkerchief from a pocket, searching for a hidden treat, sitting on his haunches, lying down and play- ing dead, and bowing. According to Dana F. Christian, a warrant officer and, later, historian and president of the Third Infantry Regiment Association, “Any tricks a horse is capable of doing, it seems Whiskey could do. Hazelrigg would throw a bunch of handkerchiefs on the ground, and Whiskey could pick out a special colored one.” Whiskey’s greatest talent was jumping. Combining spectacular jumps with a repertoire of tricks, the horse and his rider did double duty at fort polo games, also supplying the half-time entertainment. No obstacle deterred the fearless, high-flying horse, be it a team of mules hitched to a supply wagon; the white mule, Snelling, standing between two fences; a group of diners seated at a table; a human hurdle; or a blazing jump. When the crowds in the stands clapped and shouted their approval, the Minneapolis Star reported, “it seemed Whiskey knew they were cheering at him.”
