1972 TRIP ON CONVERTED SCHOOL BUS WITH 21 COLLEGE STUDENTS
CALIFORNIA VIA BRITISH COLUMBIA
Fred had a brainstorm his first year of teaching college in New Ulm -- that he could assemble a group of college students for a 30 day 3,000 mile cross country camping trip. He drove to Milwaukee and purchased a used school bus that he could convert into a camper. All the side windows were covered with screens. The school bus yellow did not seem right, so he spray painted the exterior a light green. In the spring he worked feverishly (as did Annette) to strip out the seats and install tables, beds, kitchen sink (with running water), gas stove with an oven, gas refrigerator and storage cabinets. Storage tank for fresh water, holding dank for used sink water, propane tanks for refrigerator and stove were all mounted underneath the bus. The storage cabinets were built along both sides of the ceilings . Each student was assigned his/her own space. No suitcases were to be taken so everything had to be fitted into a confined area. To keep costs down we stayed at campgrounds and made all of our own meals. The cost assessed to each person for transportation and lodging was $100. We collected money for the food pot as we went along.

1976 ANNETTE & FRED ATTEND OXFORD UNIVERSITY, ENGLAND
Fred received a scholarship to attend classes at Worchester College, University of Oxford in England. His English history courses were in conjunction with his PhD program at TCU. Credits earned would be through Stanford University in California. All of Fred's transportation, tuition and lodging were covered, Ann agreed to attend Oxford, too, and took a course in British Paintings of the Romantic Age. We paid for Annette's expenses. We stayed in the New Dorm (1714), ate meals in the college dinning room and sipped tea in the Commons. Classes were taught Oxford style in seminar rooms or at sites.

TRAVEL WITH COLLEGE STUDENTS & LYNN'S FRIEND CHERYL BENSON
We used our white van for trips and rounded up college students to travel with us. They helped pay for the gas and contributed to the adventure. The van was converted into a camper and we pulled a pull-out camper for the extra people.
