1976 ANNETTE & FRED ATTEND OXFORD UNIVERSITY, ENGLAND

Fred received a scholarship to attend classes at Worcester College, University of Oxford in England. His English history courses were in conjunction with his PhD program at TCU. Credits earned would be through Stanford University in California. All of Fred's transportation, tuition and lodging were covered, Ann agreed to attend Oxford, too, and took a course in British Paintings of the Romantic Age. We paid for Annette's expenses. We stayed in the New Dorm (1714), ate meals in the college dinning room and sipped tea in the Commons. Classes were taught Oxford style in seminar rooms or at sites.

ANNETTE'S STUDIES AT OXFORD
Annette took a course on British Artists at Oxford because that was a course Fred had wanted to take. Fred concentrated on Tudor and Stuart history that fit in with his PhD program. What worked out nice for Fred is that Annette's teacher had thought he was to hold classes seven days a week and Fred asked if he could tag along as they took tours to various art museums and large mansions that housed valuable works of art. Annette's teacher ad sure and that all I had to do was board the bus with Annette. This was great! What a wonderful way to see masterpieces of art and famous historic mansions at the same time.
First the British paintings. Since Annette's professor was the curator of the famous Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, we will begin with some works of Hogarth.

INDIAN LIVE-IN SEMINAR WITH UWM 1977

The University of Wisconsin asked that spouses and children attend this living in the wilderness exercise because a real Indian village had families. We asked our daughters if they wanted to participate or they could stay with an aunt in New Ulm. They wanted to live like Indians in Northern Wisconsin. We all had to agree to absolve the University of Wisconsin in the event of injury or death. A requirement also stipulated that everyone had to take part in all activities (no spectators) of the program, including food gathering, living in a tent, ceremonial dances, building a canoe, making our own moccasins, etc. I called and asked that an exception be made for anything religious because it could be a matter of conscience.
They agreed. Later when we were asked to find a tree we felt confortable with for meditation we declined. On another occasion when I could have been adopted into a tribe I declined because  I felt uncomfortable with the ritual. UWM was accommodating. All the Indian instructors were wonderful and we became friends. The Medicine Woman became especially close. When we had to give up our camper
and parked it in Minoqua, Wisconsin, we gave her permission to use it when she wanted to get away for her doctoral studies. PS We not only gave up our Starcraft camper we had to surrender our car keys.

ENTIRE CAMPGROUND IN NORTHERN WISCONSIN WAS SET ASIDE

FRED MOVED UP CLOSER FOR THIS SHOT

AND CLOSER YET

THE MAIN SUBJECT OF FRED'S  DISSERTATION WAS A BRITIH INDIAN AGENT
ALEXANDER MCKEE BELOW: FATHER WAS WHITE TRADER, MOTHER SHAWNEE
THIS 1760 PAINTING WAS  TOUCHED UP. HIS RELATIVES HAD MODIFIED HIS NOSE AND CHANGED HIS TOMAHAWK TO A CLARINET. I ARGUED WITH THE MUSEUM THAT HE WAS MIXED BLOOD AND HAD A SHAWNEE MOTHER.

ALEXANDER MCKEE'S FATHER HAD A TRADING POST
ON THIS ISLAND ACROSS THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER

AT ONE TIME DELAWARE AND SHAWNEE INDIANS
TRADED ON THIS RIVER IN PENNSYLVANIA

A BELOW-WATER-BRIDGE TO MCKEE'S ISLAND FORMED MCKEE'S RAPIDS

ALEXANDER MCKEE BEFRIENDED THE MORAVIAN INDIANS WHO WERE TRAPPED BETWEEN BRITISH INDIAN ALLIES AND COLONISTS DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. HE WAS SADDENED WHEN A LARGE NUMBER OF  MORAVIAN INDIANS WERE MASSACRED AT GNADENHUTTEN, OHIO  (28 men, 29 women and 39 children). WHEN OUR COLLEGE STUDY TOUR VISITED THE GROUNDS AND BUILDINGS, WE WERE TOUCHED BY THE MEMORIAL MARKER FOR THOSE CHRISTIAN INDIANS

HE GAVE THEM THEM REFUGE IN AT HIS ESTATE IN CANADA LOCATED ACROSS FROM FORT PONTCHATRAIN (DETROIT). LATER HE PROVIDED A VILLAGE SITE FOR THEM FURTHER INLAND OF UPPER CANADA, PRESENT DAY FAIRFIELD, ONTARIO.

IN A VILLAGE MORAVIAN INDIANS (DELAWARE) LIVED IN HOMES SIMILAR
TO THE MISSIONARIES.

EXCEPT THAT INSIDE THE FLOOR WAS JUST GROUND
AND A FIRE PIT WAS PLACED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM.

THE MORAVIAN MISSIONARIES BUILT THEIR HOMES RIGHT AMONG THE NATIVES.

MORAVIANS STRESSED THAT PEOPLE SHOULD BE HUMBLE AND THEREFORE THEIR GRAVESTONES WERE FLAT. THE NAMES INSCRIBED ON THE GRAVESTONES OF THESE NATIVES WERE CHRISTIAN  NAMES, NAMES FROM THE BIBLE.

I ALSO SPENT CONSIDERABLE TIME AT THE CANADIAN NATIONAL ARCHIVES IN OTTAWA,  CANADA. WITH A GRANT FROM A.A.L. TCU CONTACTED THE MUSEUM TO ALLOW ME SPECIAL ACCESS TO DOCUMENTS IN STORAGE NOT ORDINARILY AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC.
