2012 Pacific Cruise IV: Ice Blockage & Kodiak Island

Fri Apr 27 At Sea

10 am Exploration Speaker Dr. Ian on Life of a Glacier: Besides covering the basics of glaciers and ice bergs he told us what to expect in Glacier Bay when we get there.

Sat Apr 28 Cross International Dateline (Cruising)

The day was one of liesure. Some watching \from the deck as we passed the westernmost Alluts.

Dr. Tanya Atwater spoke on the Ice Age Earth
in the Exploration Series. She said dating was difficult and figures vary, even with the Carbon 14 method.

Dr. Ian embraced the speaker.

We crossed the International Date Line, an imaginary line on the earth's surface, at approximately the 180th meridian (LONGITUDE). Traveling east across the line, takes the traveler back one day; traveling west, takes the traveler forward one day. This called for a ceremony and a ceremony called for preparations. Here the Blue Noses are applied to the poolside victims.

The ceremony began:

1 pm Behind the Scenes with Backstage Tour and Cast Chat

Dr. Atwater on Kodiak Settlement, Earthquakes & Tsunami History

Out on the deck I observed the Aleutian Islands off to the left.

Then I charted our position as we headed for Kodiak Island.

On the way to Show Time, I stopped to hear Larry on the Guitar.

Jim and Peggy Brown were waiting in the Lounge for the opening curtain.

Eden was on stage again with an all new show.

Another towel animal greeted me.

Mon Apr 30 Kodiak, AK 8:00am 5:00pm

Today we sighted Kodiak Island.

Then we arrived at the Port City of Kodiak Island.

The bridge in the background is the Near Island Bridge, also known as the Fred Zharoff Bridge.

Across the harbor:

The ship was conveniently located in respect to the city. I started my walk down Rezanof Drive lined with fishing processors.

I peeked through a fence to watch a crane lift fish from the hold of a fishing boat.

A few doors down I walked into a plant where fish was prepared for packing and packed into boxes. The foreman
limited my access to the doorway area.

Across the street workers labored among palates as they
loaded huge refrigerated storage containers. They saw me and waved.

These lined up large containers were all hooked to thick electrical cords which supplied energy for cold storage conditions. The motors were noisy as if in competition for
attention.

The strong fishy odor was not easy to ignore. This, no doubt, attracted birds. This pair posed for me.

I moved on to the scenic boat harbor area.

From here I could also get a good view of the city proper. The building in the upper center of this photo is the Harbor Master's Building (Fisherman's Memorial).

On the far side of town was the Russian Orthodox Cathedral or Holy Resurrection.

I walked back through the town and headed toward the ship. Most of the city was rebuilt after the 1964 tsunami To my right was Pillar Mountain, hardly what looks like a mountain, but
that is what it is called.

Once back on the Lido deck I took photos of the  area across the harbor

What could be more fitting than to have Alaskan salmon for dinner? I ordered fish quite often and it was always served just right.

Jim read up on Sitka while waiting for Show Time to begin.

Zaandam Singers and Dancers paid a tribute to the South:
